Discounting is a tool. Use it wrong, and you train customers to wait for a sale. Use it right, and it drives revenue without killing your margins.

Most brands go one of two ways:

  1. They discount too often. Customers catch on, and full-price sales disappear.

  2. They don’t discount at all. Thinking it’ll ‘protect their brand,’ but instead, they lose out on conversions.

The trick? Be intentional about it.

1. Reward the Right People

Not everyone should get the same discount. Prioritize:

  • First time buyers to reduce friction

  • VIPs and repeat customers who actually deserve it

  • Lapsed buyers who need a nudge to return

2. Use It as a Hook, Not a Crutch

If your only value prop is ‘cheaper than usual,’ you’re in trouble. Instead, use discounts to get customers in the door—then wow them with your product and experience so they don’t need one next time.

3. Set Clear Boundaries

  • Time limits = urgency.

  • Exclusive access = perceived value.

  • No overuse = customers actually believe your pricing.

Discounts aren’t bad. Lazy discounts are. If you’re using them as a bandaid instead of a strategy, you’re leaving money on the table.
