The 5 things in DTC you need to know today

🗣 Agency owners only, book a time to learn about my new project here

#1 - 🔎 SEO tips for Amazon

📰 TL;DR - This piece is a great introductory guide for practicing good SEO as a seller on Amazon. It all starts with great keyword research — what terms are you targeting? Which are popular? Which competitors are also targeting that keyword? Then it gets into writing solid product names and descriptions that are clear and informative but also designed to please the algorithm. This also gets into product image optimization, including following Amazon’s standards for accessibility. Overall, a great introduction to these tactics.

💡 Insight - Selling on Amazon involves way more than simply listing products and hoping for the best. There’s a whole side industry built around optimizing for the platform, and people who treat that business like a game they’re trying to beat. If you’re a DTC brand thinking of getting onto Amazon as a new channel, you need to be up to date on all the SEO tips and tricks if you want to actually make sales.

#3 - 🤖 Walmart unveils back-to-school Roblox game

📰 TL;DR - I know — Walmart isn’t DTC. But if we’re talking about marketing, here’s a cool example. Walmart has launched an experience on Roblox designed for back-to-school called Supercampus. It’s a game within the game, but it’s also a way to push branding for Walmart brands like Bic, Crayola, and 3M. Kids playing the game actually solve puzzles and play with those brands’ goods. Obviously, the idea is that kids play on the platform then form brand familiarity and ask for those products when shopping for school with their parents.

💡 Insight - Yes, there’s something dystopian about getting kids to play a game that’s essentially just getting hooked on particular brands. But it also shows that of all the “metaverse” nonsense, Roblox has endured. That’s probably because it’s actually a game and not just a place to look at an NFT and it’s genuinely insanely popular with Gen Alpha. Walmart is certainly not the first brand to venture onto Roblox and I’m sure they won’t be the last.

#4 - 🛠️ Things worth checking out

♻️ RESALE - The secondhand market is still growing — in fat, 27% of people bought secondhand for the first time in the last year. Read more here.

🎨 DESIGN - Here’s a handy list of 19 free web design tools.

FUTURE - Is a headless CMS the way to future-proof your business? This piece argues yes.

📧 KLAVIYO - Kalviyo, which I bet you may already be using, is going public. Here are some quick facts to know.

👀 SEO - Here’s a quick guide to keyword difficulty and what the means.

#5 - 💸 Why some fashion brands are lowering prices

📰 TL;DR - It’s tough out there, but could the answer actually be lowering prices? That’s the game Wray, a DTC womenswear brand, is taking. They announced recently on social media that prices are going to fall 15-20%. “This could be the stupidest thing I’ve ever done, or it could save the company,” said the founder. There will be no layoffs or anything like that — they’re just going to be taking a smaller cut of every purchase. This comes after sales fell 40% over the last year and customers said price pressure and inflation were to blame.

💡 Insight - This is a very bold move, and I’m here for it. In a cost of living crisis, what’s a better olive branch to would-be customers than cutting prices? I saw it generate some goodwill on social media, though I’m surprised it didn’t generate much media buzz. If you’re curious, you can see some of the comments on the post here. It’s also a huge gamble. If this doesn’t work, it would be disastrous to raise prices again. Definitely something to watch.
