⚰️ RIP metaverse
📰 TL;DR - Oh, metaverse, you tried. Business Insider has what is essentially an obituary for the metaverse and all its promises. It was hyped up to be the next Big Thing online, but did we ever really know what it was? As the author puts it, “The inability to define the Metaverse in any meaningful way didn't get in the way of its ascension to the top of the business world.” Really the biggest problem is that no one’s really using it.
💡 Insight - I wanted to include this because the metaverse had a lot of promises for brands, too, specifically for commerce, that just haven’t come to fruition. But if you’ll allow me to rant, I think all is not lost. If you accept that most iterations of the metaverse were just really boring video games with NFTs, you can see why it didn’t pan out. However, I do believe Roblox to be an exception. While it’s been lumped in with Decentraland and others, it’s been thriving for much longer and I’m betting the kids who play it just think of it as a fun video game. I think if any platform still has potential for e-comm and brand initiatives, it’s Roblox.

🧳 Dive into Away’s omnichannel approach
📰 TL;DR - Luggage brand Away is posed to open yet more retail stores and it’s actually lifting their online sales at the same time. According to this article, when an Away store opens in a new market, online sales go up by 150% a year later. Part of this is that stores allow customers to have meaningful interactions with products — to actually touch and open them. Maybe they don’t buy in store, but they may buy online later
💡 Insight - This really backs up everything I’ve been reading about the trend toward omnichannel. It’s not a matter of retail vs. e-comm. Rather, what we’re seeing is brands having their IRL and online channels support each other at the end of the day. Which, again, explains why we’re seeing so many DTC brands branch into retail and wholesale this year.
🤖 All the AI tools you need for SEO
📰 TL;DR - This guide is a pretty thorough look at how to use AI for SEO. This goes over 15 AI tools that are available as well as their features, so you can narrow down which one works best for you. There are also some interesting stats, like that 45% of marketers use generative AI for content creation, and 48% use AI for research.
💡 Insight - I wanted to share this because SEO is such a huge part of e-commerce marketing, and it’s made mercifully easier by using AI programs. And although ChatGPT gets the most hype (it’s basically become synonymous with AI), it’s hardly the only option out there.
