Today's DTC news, tips, & tools you need to know

👂🏼 How to do social listening natively

📰 TL;DR - Aside from promoting your own brand, the most important thing you can be doing on social media is social listening. That means checking for mentions — whether with an @ or not — of your brand as well as your competitors and general chatter within your niche. This guide goes over how to do that without the need for a third-party tool. Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook all have ways of monitoring their platform from right within the app.

💡 Insight - This is a very helpful and practical guide. While it would be nice if we all had the funds for a fancy third-party social media tool, I know some of you are just working with what you’ve got. I also think this is a great idea for checking in on your product’s niche before you launch, or while you’re still scheming, as a way to understand how people talk about your niche before going all-in on an idea.

🔥 Tapping into the power of micro-influencers

📰 TL;DR - Most brands either spend their budget on one-off influencer shoutouts or UGC content but our friends over at minisocial have a more inventive way to work with influencers. Their magic? Curating a list of micro-influencers perfect for your brand who provide both reach and fully-licensed UGC content.

💡 Insight - DTC Unicorn Harry's worked with minisocial to source more than 25 highly effective pieces of fully-licensed videos from micro influencers with more than 210k+ combined followers, which in turn generated more than $4,500+ worth of earned media value!

🫧 The proof is in the pop

📰 TL;DR - Keeping it practical this edition: bubble wrap! This is something you might purchase a whole bunch of without thinking too hard about it. Well, this YouTuber bought bubble wrap from a bunch of different brands and found most of them were not delivering the amount promised. One brand, for example, only sent 400 feet when they were supposed to send 700. Wow! To save you some time, the best they found in the video was American Bubble Boy — they ordered 1,050 feet and got 1,020.

💡 Insight - Again, how often do you think about the value spent on your shipping materials? How many of you are counting each box, or foot of wrapping, or whatever? If you’re shipping every item with bubble wrap, for example, that’s a huge loss over time. So take this as a reminder to do an audit of your packing supplies and make sure everything adds up.

📚 Wholesale 101

📰 TL;DR - The Shopify blog has a nice guide on how to get into the wholesale game. It’s good info whether you’re a DTC who wants a piece of B2B, or if you’re looking to start fresh with a wholesale business. Also helpful is this includes ideas of specific products that are in demand for wholesale, as well as a roundup of wholesale markets.

💡 Insight - From what we’ve seen, B2B is on the rise — both in net new businesses and in traditionally DTC brands getting into wholesale. I like that is also gets into some of the nitty-gritty of actually operating a B2B business, including as a second arm of a DTC. I think it’s also worth noting that Shopify in particular has noticed the upward B2B trend so I’m not surprised they’re making a push on highlighting their own products.
