Today's DTC news, tips, & tools you need to know

🛍️ This FTC rule would impact e-comm subscriptions

📰 TL;DR - A proposed FTC rule would have a big impact on any brands that offer subscriptions. The “click to cancel” rule would make it so that canceling a subscription must be as easy as the initial subscription. Ideally, that means one easy click. This means customers shouldn’t have to call or email or deal with customer support to simply cancel.

💡 Insight - I completely support this, and not just as someone who shops online. Having a complicated cancellation process is bad for your brand and no way to build a relationship with customers. The strength of your sales and brand should be based on great products and great customer service — not making it difficult to cancel. Hopefully you don’t need a rule like this to make good choices for your customers.

🔥 3 video ad formats to try

📰 TL;DR - If you need some fresh inspo for video ads, here’s some tips from Social Savannah. She recommends trying:

  • Vlog style

  • Comparisons

  • Negative hooks

She also provides examples for each ad format, so you know exactly what to do.

💡 Insight - First, if you don’t already follow her, Savannah is a must follow on Twitter. Also, I definitely think the vlog-style format she mentions is becoming a dominant style for ads on TikTok. It has the vibe of UGC, which always reads as more authentic, especially on TikTok. All these formats are great to try even as regular content on TikTok, Reels, or Shorts.

🛒 New DTC rug brand opens to new customers

📰 TL;DR - Ernesta is a new DTC rug brand, brought to you by some former Peloton employees. What’s different about this brand is it offers custom sizing. You can also start with a sample box for $50 — if you buy, that $50 go towards the purchase of a rug. It was initially in a soft launch, open to only 3,700 zip codes. Now it’s expanded to 30,000.

💡 Insight - There are two interesting things here. First, the limited offering at this stage builds anticipation and also gives the brand the chance to work out kinks. Customizable products are a whole different ball game, and I imagine they’re going slow to make sure it can truly scale. The sample box is also an interesting idea. Yes, it slows the path to conversion but between that and getting custom sizing, I can see return rates being very low.
