Keep Your Upsell Game Strong (and Simple)

Ibrahim Masood - DTC Growth and Retention Expert

If you're upselling in the cart, don’t throw the entire catalog at your customer. Stick to 1-3 complementary products. Why? Because overwhelming them is a surefire way to see them leave—fast.

Here’s the playbook:

  • Don’t Overload: Upsell no more than three relevant items. Cluttered carts = confused customers = abandoned carts.

  • Make It Count: The upsell should enhance their original choice, not feel random.

  • Prepare For Abandonment Anyway: Even with a clean cart and smart upsells, a significant amount of shoppers will leave anyway for X number of reasons. That’s where a killer abandoned cart flow comes in.

The numbers don’t lie—70% of carts get abandoned. So, make sure your abandoned cart emails are optimized. Include the upsell they left behind, show how it adds value, and use visuals to seal the deal.

Upsells are the warm-up act; your email flow is the closer. Nail both, and you’ve got a revenue driving machine!

DTC Playbook: Lovevery’s Meta Ads

Sai Teja - Paid Ads Expert

Welcome back to the DTC Playbook!

Yesterday, we broke down Lovevery’s Amazon product page and the strategies behind its success.

Today, we’re shifting gears to their Meta Ads—an essential part of their customer acquisition strategy.

Meta ads are the gateway to capturing parents' attention in the crowded educational tools market.

Lovevery’s ad for their Reading Skill Set showcases strong fundamentals but leaves room for optimization.

Let me break it down.

What Works Well

  1. Appealing Headline

    • “Swap no-fun phonics drills for an award-winning reading program that’s full of fun.”

    • This headline addresses a key pain point for parents and positions Lovevery as an engaging alternative.

  2. Clear Product Overview

    • The ad breaks down the 9 tools included, each labeled with names and paired with visual elements like Compound Word Pairs and Movable Alphabet. It’s easy to digest and shows variety.

  3. Trust & Credibility

    • The phrase “award-winning” builds trust, and the detailed, well-designed layout reflects a premium product that appeals to parents looking for quality.

Actionable CTA

  • The “Shop Now” button directs parents to act, making the path to purchase straightforward.

What Could Be Better

  1. Weak Emotional Hook

    • While functional, the ad misses an opportunity to tap into parents’ emotions. For example:

      • Replace “Prep for Kindergarten Reading” with: “Give Your Child the Confidence to Succeed in Kindergarten.”

  2. Missing USP Details

    • Highlight what makes the kit unique. For example, add specifics like “Designed by early education experts” or “Backed by research to boost reading skills.”

  3. Relatable Imagery

    • Show children using the tools in real-life scenarios to create a stronger connection. This human element could increase relatability and engagement.

Stronger Visual Contrast

  • The pastel background complements the brand’s aesthetic but blends into busy social feeds. A slightly bolder or gradient background would enhance visibility.

Key Takeaways

Lovevery’s ad successfully captures attention with its structured design, credibility, and actionable CTA.

However, adding emotional appeal, emphasizing unique features, and including relatable imagery could elevate the ad's performance and better connect with the target audience.

Bridges aren’t meant to be burned—they’re meant to be crossed again

Lesson? When people exit, they can either close doors or leave them wide open. Treat those exits like a handshake, not a mic drop. Because you never know—your next collaboration might come from the most unexpected places.

Let’s normalize professional respect. It pays dividends.
