The 5 things in DTC you need to know today
#1 - š 16 lessons from Liquid Death
š° TL;DR - Liquid Death is a product that shouldnāt have worked, right? Itās essentially canned water with edgy marketing. Yet, it did. Dave Schools put together this post of 16 lessons from Liquid Death and its exponential rise. For example, early on the brandās founder put together a product video as if it already existed, and thatās what proved the idea had legs. It went viral, in fact. Really, the brand is really the whole business ā itās just water, after all! But the founder stuck to his gut, made marketing magic, and made the whole thing work.
š” Insight - Liquid Death is such an interesting case study. Many DTC brands are trying to appeal to the masses with a unique product. Liquid Death is the opposite, a product in a crowded space that knows it will be polarizing. Thereās some magic in that. Itās also worth noting that there were moments in Liquid Deathās journey where they could have rightfully just given up, but they didnāt. This is certainly inspiring, but also difficult to replicate. I like the section where Schools points out where less edgy brands can still take inspiration from Liquid Death, like experimenting, āproductizing,ā and finding ways to stand out.

#3 - š¤ Even more Prime Day insights
š° TL;DR - I know, it already feels like Prime Day was ages ago. But thereās now been a couple of weeks to get some deep analysis, and here it is. A report from Numerator dug up that an impressive 36% of US shoppers bought something on Prime Day. Also, most of them bought one thing at a time ā 73% of orders had one item. And 10% of shoppers spent over $500. People also werenāt necessarily browsing aimlessly, 82% went in knowing what they wanted to get. Click through for more stats.
š” Insight - Youāve got to hand it to Amazon, theyāve basically successfully created their own Black Friday. It also makes me wonder ā is it worth selling on Amazon just for access to Prime Day? I canāt answer that for you but I have definitely seen DTC brands who donāt sell on Amazon hosting their own promotions to coincide with Prime Day, hoping to get a piece of the shopping frenzy. I think thatās a good plan, honestly. If Prime Day is another Black Friday, everyone can get in on it.
#4 - š ļø Things worth checking out
š TRENDS - Hereās AdAgeās latest roundup of DTC trends and moves.
š THIRDLOVE - Intimates brand ThirdLove is now selling on Amazon, citing the platformās speed and convenience. Read more here.
š„ SHEIN VS. TEMU - The war between these two cheap shopping platforms is heating up. Dig into it here.
š” PATENTS - Patents are a somewhat complex but important process for those creating original products. This guide breaks it down.
š BOOKS - Hereās a list of books about the history of the internet and e-commerce to add to your shelf.
#5 - šæ Make TikTok easier with their script generator
š° TL;DR - Running out of ideas for TikTok ads? Well, did you know TikTok has its own script generator? Located in the Creative Center, the generator lets you input an industry, a product name, and a product description, and a few other fields, and it spits out something usable. Itās detailed enough to include shot ideas and text overlay. Itās pretty idiot proof and this guide goes over exactly how to use it.
š” Insight - Itās worth noting that TikTok isnāt the only place to find a script generator ā Kapwing has one too, for example. I think in a pinch these can be super helpful if youāre really focussed on consistently creating content but are just out of ideas. My issue with these is that the tone doesnāt have much variation and thereās already an issue on TikTok with a lot of ads feeling too similar. For sure use these services as a starting point, but the magic of TikTok happens when youāre willing to get weird. So donāt box yourself in.
