Today's DTC news, tips, & tools you need to know

๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ Get woke and go broke? Not so much!

๐Ÿ“ฐ TL;DR - Bud Light is the latest brand to be caught in the culture wars in the US. The brand recently partnered with trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney, which, to no one's surprise, riled up those in the right-wing world. When these things happen, conservative commentators will call for a boycott. However, Rolling Stone looked into the effect of this style of outcry and found that brands who come under attack for wokeness are actually doing just fine. Note: the article has a paywall, so try an incognito tab.

๐Ÿ’ก Insight - Given all the research into the part values play in branding, this shouldn't actually be a big surprise. We know that Gen Z specifically prefers to support brands with strong values on display. They want to see brands take a stance on issues and push for change. And yes, you can definitely be cynical about whether brands really care about change or their bottom line, but it's a strategy that works. Point is, taking a stance on a social issue may help more than hurt.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ How to scale wholesale

๐Ÿ“ฐ TL;DR - Okay I think we can agree by now that DTC and wholesale isn't a chuch-and-state situation these days. If you're doing one, you might also be doing the other โ€” increasingly so. This is a good Twitter thread from Paul Goodman about what he learned scaling up the wholesale branch of his business. (If you've got paywall access, there's also a new report from Glossy and Modern Retail about DTC brands leaning into wholesale for growth.)

๐Ÿ’ก Insight - First, Paul is a solid follow, he's always tweeting useful e-comm info and experiences. Second, one thing I took away from these tweets is how wholesale can in fact boost DTC sales. He uses this as an example of social proof โ€” if you can say you're selling in a trendy or large store, that tells DTC customers your stuff must be good. I also like how he talks about how relationship-dependent wholesale is, which you may find a new and exciting challenge coming from pure DTC.

๐Ÿ’ป Website design tips for e-comm

๐Ÿ“ฐ TL;DR - Great products can be let down by bad website design when it comes to the DTC world. This guide goes over the elements of sound site design โ€” from responsiveness, to load time, to the look. And what I really like is this piece is full of examples like Glossier, Gymshark, Tushy, and Outdoor Voices.

๐Ÿ’ก Insight - Site design is one of those fundamental things that's worth obsessing over, even long after launch. There's always a little tweak or spruce you can do to improve your design. Shopify obviously chose Shopify merchants for these examples, but they're all worth looking at. It really shows how many ways a single platform can be used to create different looks and feels. It's also worth noting: if you're as big as Glossier it's not just the founder messing around with the Shopify dashboard. At some point, hiring a pro isn't a bad idea.
