#1 - 🎨 Canva releases AI tools
📰 TL;DR - For its 10th anniversary, Canva has released a suite of AI tools that will make using the tool even easier. They’re calling it Magic Studio and it comes with tools like Magic Switch, that can instantly turn something like a social media post into a blog or an email without needing to fiddle with it. It can also translate the copy for different markets. It also has something called Magic Media, which can create short videos based on text prompts. Plus there are some nifty editing tools.
💡 Insight - I know this isn’t e-commerce specific, but I also know a whole heck of a lot of you exclusively use Canva for your creative, especially ads and social posts. The tool to turn one type of post into something like an email is brilliant and will surely cut down on your design time. You could design a Meta ad, then turn it into an Instagram post, then an email. Love to see it.

#3 - 🧶 Etsy strike births new marketplace
📰 TL;DR - Remember how a bunch of Etsy sellers went on strike last year? Well, some of those who were upset with Etsy have created a new rival. It’s called Artisans Cooperative and just launched with more than 70 merchants and some 1,200 items. Built with Shopify, it is staking itself as a place for genuinely handmade goods, which comes after complaints that Etsy has simply become awash in mass sellers and dropshippers. It is built to be community-led, with policies and commissions being a group effort. it also doesn’t charge listing fees. Sellers can also join the co-op as part owners.
💡 Insight - Honestly, good on these creators for launching something new. People have been complaining about Etsy for ages, and this looks to be addressing many of the issues head-on. The site itself is nicely built and easy to browse, and it also makes it easy to see which artisan you’re buying from. It will be an uphill battle though — Etsy is well established and ranks super high on Google, not to mention the brand name recognition. But for the ethically-conscious shopper, I can see this new site being very welcome.

⛓️ SUPPLY CHAIN - Read about supply chain issues will a threat for some brands this holiday season.
#5 - 👻 It’s spooky season, baby
📰 TL;DR - It’s October, which means we have a full month to obsess about Halloween. And people are, indeed, obsessing. Sales of Halloween items have reportedly spiked earlier than usual this year as shoppers gear up for the big day. In fact, searches for “Halloween costumes for adults” rose 395% in August. As for where people are shopping, it’s Amazon. Consumers of all ages (44%) are likely to check the marketplace first when looking for Halloween products. By contrast, only 10% will bother shopping online with Spirit Halloween, Party City, and the like. As in many cases, younger shoppers are the most likely to look online.
💡 Insight - Halloween is never going to be the new Christmas or anything, but in the US and Canada, it’s turning into a pretty big shopping event. 41% of millennials are expected to spend more on Halloween this year than last. If you’re not finding a way to pull out some product or marketing for the occasion, you’re missing out.
