Today's DTC news, tips, & tools you need to know

Why this brand is keeping it DTC

📰 TL;DR - Branch Basics is a DTC eco-friendly cleaner brand that plans to stay DTC, thank you very much. The brand very much wants to keep its focus on communicating with shoppers via social media platforms, SMS, and virtual events. They want relationships with customers to be direct, not through a third party. They also happen to be subscription-based, which makes sense for keeping things online.

💡 Insight - A purely DTC brand? In 2023? What a novelty! Really though, it’s a great reminder that not everyone needs to be in a rush to wholesale, whether now or in the future. The brand’s commitment to direct relationships with shoppers is really a testament to the power of DTC and what it can offer that going to your local Target just never can.

📱 Amazon Inspire is now fully available in the US

📰 TL;DR - Amazon’s answer to endless scrolling content is now fully rolled out across the US. Amazon Inspire is like a TikTok feed, but of photos, videos, and of course products. It’s social commerce — Amazon style. Every user’s feed is different, fed by an algorithm that tracks their previous interactions and purchases. The content comes from customer reviews, influencers, and brands themselves.

💡 Insight - If you sell on Amazon, don’t overlook this. This is the ideal time to start posting content while it’s relatively shiny and new. You can’t guarantee when a post will actually show up in a customer’s feed but I’m guessing a mix of interesting content and volume will help you get ahead. Also, there’s more reason than ever to encourage reviews with photos and video. Here’s a full guide from Jungle Scout on how Inspire works and how to post.

🎨 Logo design 101

📰 TL;DR - Here’s a guide on how to make a snappy logo for your e-comm brand. This is filled with plenty of examples and some sage guidance about avoiding clip art and cliché font choices. It also goes over some free or low-cost software and generators to get the job done.

💡 Insight - A logo is one of those decisions you make early on that will absolutely haunt and infuriate you if you don’t like it. This guide is pretty thorough but I’d also recommend poking around Fiverr, Upwork, or another gig/freelance design site if you’re particularly lacking in artistic skill. Also, if you do happen to hate your logo, it’s never too late to give it a spruce.

😎 Community building in 3 steps

📰 TL;DR - Here’s a great little Twitter thread from Ashvin Melwani on a method for building a community for your customers. The short version is: create a post-purchase ad, talk up your community, then direct them to sign up on the platform of your choice. Boom.

💡 Insight - When we talk about loyalty and community in e-comm, I think something as dead simple as a Facebook group is an overlooked solution. And, as Ash notes, leave that group open so customers can immediately see what sort of benefits it might have for them. As an example, here’s the group for Obvi on Facebook.
