🎶 Douyin is raking it in with e-comm growth
📰 TL;DR - Douyin, TikTok’s sister app in Asian markets, reported its gross merchandise volume on the app grew 80% last year. Douyin and TikTok are both owned by ByteDance, who has been pretty secretive about e-comm figures, though reportedly it was $202.3 billion USD last year. All that said, Douyin has become a major player in e-comm in China, rivaling the likes of Alibaba and JD.com.
💡 Insight - My big question here is if the shopping features on Douyin will ever trickle over to TikTok. Yes, TikTok has some capability, it’s nowhere near the scale of what Douyin is doing. One guess is a hesitancy about livestream shopping success in US markets, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s probably TikTok. We know they have the tech, but when can we get our hands on it?
📈 How Wonderskin achieved a 46% increase in ROAS*
📰 TL;DR - Want to drive sales and increase your ROAS on TikTok? Wonderskin did it with Insense! They tested TikTok's Video Shopping Ads and saw a 46% increase in ROAS.
💡 Insight - Wonderskin, an award-winning beauty brand, wanted to promote their signature long-lasting lip stain and reach a new audience on TikTok. They turned to Insense to run a series of TikTok Video Shopping Ads with Product Cards that showcased the different colors of their products. By targeting audiences interested in beauty and makeup with TikTok Ads Manager, they were able to effectively drive sales and increase their ROAS by 46%.

👾 E-sports streamer launches DTC brand
📰 TL;DR - E-sports legend and Twitch streamer FaZe is entering e-comm with a DTC candy product called 1UP Candy. It’s launching with a limited run of a sour gummy, aimed at livestreaming fans. They’ve also partnered with Cash App, so only Cash App card holders can purchase it at first.
💡 Insight - My first impression is that a line of candy lacks imagination. It almost seems cynical — is it actually a good product or are they just banking on fandom and name recognition? Either way, it’ll probably work. This also very much shows the trend of creators finding new ways to monetize. Ads and affiliate sales can only take you so far — getting into e-comm with an owned product, beyond simple merch, is a proven method to diversify revenue and fully own a part of a creator’s business. That means creators are also often looking for partners to make their DTC dreams a reality — is that something you’d be up for?
🪒 How BushBalm tapped TikTok for growth
📰 TL;DR - This piece digs into how BushBalm has found success with TikTok marketing. One method they use is finding UGC content and boosting them into ads with permission from the creators. This is harder to pull off on Instagram, and it’s also tedious work — but sounds like it’s worth the effort. As a result, they’ve also pulled back from Snapchat and Pinterest.
💡 Insight - I probably see a BushBalm ad on TikTok about twice a day and there’s something else smart that they’re doing. They understand the importance of authenticity, and in their trimmer ads they actually show an up-close shot of a woman shaving her bikini line, hairs and all. That’s a huge departure from hair removal ads of the past that, hilariously, always showed women shaving already-base legs. That’s the sort of tone Gen Z hates and BushBalm has been smart with their ads.
