The 5 things in DTC you need to know today
#1 - 🧐 What’s a good discount?
📰 TL;DR - What do customers actually consider a good discount and how much do discounts factor into the decision to make a purchase? A new survey looked at exactly that. First, anything less than 10% is simply not attractive — between 10% and 49% is much more enticing. As well, half of people are plenty happy to wait a month or longer to purchase a non-essential item if that means it’ll be on sale. Plus, 6 in 10 will wait for a “deal day.”
💡 Insight - My two cents as a shopper is that even a 10% discount doesn’t feel enticing anymore. Pretty much every e-comm brand offers that for signing up for emails. More enticing to me is a slightly higher discount if I give up my phone number, which feels like a fair trade to me. Also, knowing that people are willing to wait a month for a sale is good info. That gives you an idea of sale pacing as well as how long in advance to start promoting sales.

#3 - 💄 The state of beauty e-comm
📰 TL;DR - Insider Intelligence (a very trustworthy source!) has a roundup of five charts on the state of beauty e-commerce. The first thing to know is that e-comm is huge for beauty — 22% of beauty sales are online. Also here is where shoppers start their beauty product search, where they discover new products (social media, by a lot), and where brands are spending their ad money.
💡 Insight - I see so many opportunities here. First, it’s so interesting that many shoppers start their search on Amazon considering how many prestige beauty brands aren’t on the platform — I think of it as more of a place to find drugstore brands. Getting on Amazon could be a game-changer for an indie brand. It’s also interesting that spending on TikTok is so low, that tells me if you put some money there you’d see less competition for eyeballs.

#5 - 😘 Customers are okay to get personal
📰 TL;DR - We’ve got another interesting survey, this time about privacy and personal information. For all the objections shoppers seem to have, most are willing to fork over personal info to complete a purchase. 70% will share their name, 56% will share their email, and 42% will share their phone number. Also, 33% are happy to do this if it means they can save some money. Ultimately, people seem pretty resigned to the fact that online shopping will require giving over some sort of personal info, but are more hesitant about cookies, location data, and when using chatbots.
💡 Insight - This underscores something a lot of e-comm brands have definitely taken note of — if you’re going to ask for someone’s info, like an email or phone number, offer something in return. I don’t particularly want more emails or text messages in my life, but I’ll do it to save money on an online order. That chatbot note is also interesting — might be worth programming your chatbot to contain information about how personal information is used.
