Should you steal Puma’s Pawn?

📰 TL;DR - Iconic shoe brand Puma partnered with an unlikely brand ambassador last year, World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen. Well, it took them a year since announcing the ambassadorship but just last week they announced the “Clyde Chess” shoe, a chess inspire version of Puma’s already famous Clyde model.

💡 Insight - As you know, we are huge fans of partnering with brand ambassadors/influencers that may seem a bit out of left field. But we are even bigger fans of collaborating with them on a product!

Say you sell lipstick, why not partner with an olympic swimmer to make a swim-inspired lipstick? Or if you sell basic T’s, maybe partner with a Twitch streamer to make a line of shirts in their favorite color and with their desired fit. The possibilities are endless…

📰 TL;DR - One of our favorite DTC Twitter follows gave us a friendly reminder last week that UGC is still crushing! But in particular, static images as UGC…

💡 Insight - I feel that when most people talk about or hear “UGC” they think videos but this was a great reminder that static images can also work as UGC. Especially if it’s whitelisted from an influencer account it seems extra organic.

What would your brand’s version of this UGC look like? Get creative!

🖼️ Five Below Is Gen Z’s 99 Cents Store

📰 TL;DR - Five Below, the youth-focused low-priced retailer, is expanding with 10 new store openings this summer. These are an addition to the 200 it already had planned for this year. They are also introducing a slew of new products above its signature $5 price point.

💡 Insight - Experts say Five Below is a Gen Z favorite! So with other low-cost party & gift retailers (like Party City & Tuesday Morning) shrinking their footprint this year, what is Five Below getting right? You guessed it! Social. They have more than 10X the following of Party City & The 99 Cents Store on Tik Tok + more than 3X the following of those two stores on IG.

Seems like social + brick & mortar is a winning strategy for Gen Z?
