📢 Meta testing new ad format
📰 TL;DR - As teased earlier this year, Meta has a new offering for ads that’s particularly useful to e-commerce brands. Called promotional ads, these are clickable ads that have a built-in promo code, so when a user clicks through the code will already be applied to their basket. If a customer doesn’t actually complete a purchase, they’ll get reminder notifications. This is currently in a testing stage and is only being offered to select brands in the US, UK, Canada, and India
💡 Insight - The demo for this new product was shown on Facebook, so it seems that’s where this format lives. On the surface, this seems like a great idea! I know I love when the promo code is filled in for me. However, Meredith Schoenberger, creative director and partner at Biddyco, expressed concern that this is going to pressure brands into always having a sale on — even if it’s not financially the right time. After all, you’re already spending on the ad.

🚫 Will Montana’s TikTok ban work?
📰 TL;DR - Montana has officially passed its TikTok ban, although it doesn’t come into effect until Jan. 1, 2024. How much that matters to you will vary, but if you’re local to Montana or have customers there, you might care a whole lot. The Montana government has set it up so it targets app stores and TikTok itself. It’s banned from being downloadable, with a daily fine of $10,000 for violations.
💡 Insight - The good news is this “ban” lacks a whole lot of teeth. First, there are still many months available to get and use TikTok. Second, kids are smart — they know how to use VPNs and other tech to get around this kind of ban. Plus, the legislation doesn’t target users — there’s no fine for actually engaging with the app or doing business on it. Plus it remains to be seen if this bill will stand up to challenges. So, for now: don’t worry too much.
🖼️ Gen Z demands better product images
📰 TL;DR - A new survey asked Gen Z how they shop, and the answer is online (duh!). But it also asked what they like to see when shopping online, and it’s images. 63% like to see user review images, 62% like text reviews, and 52% want a detailed product gallery. The survey also found that having great product images could reduce returns and abandoned carts. And for apparel and shoes purchases, 57% want to see 360-degree images and 53% want 3D models.
💡 Insight - This all backs up all the other surveys and data I’ve read about how important images and even AR are. As people return to retail, e-comm needs to compete by making shopping online as close as possible to touching and seeing the real thing. That means being able to determine accurate size, color, and shape. Also interesting is I recently saw stats that US shoppers don’t actually care that much for videos of products — they’d rather see still photos. Product photography is always an area with opportunities to improve.
