Today's DTC news, tips, & tools you need to know

🥙 E-commerce as a co-op

📰 TL;DR - Hive Brands is reinventing itself from a regular ol’ food and bev marketplace to an e-commerce accelerator. Until now, Hive Brands has been a marketplace for sustainable grocery products, but a premium offering will now take over client acquisition, marketing, logistics, and fulfillment. They’ve signed on three brands for the program so far.

💡 Insight - This is a super interesting approach for a marketplace and one that I think will be very welcome for brands that are new or struggling to scale. It also fits into two trends we’ve seen: tech that offers a more white-glove experience for e-comm brands, and the beefing up of e-comm tech for specific niches (in this case, food). Sure, you’re going to pay for these services, but the brands involved will be free to focus on brand building, and doesn’t that sound nice.

🧶 Etsy introduces wedding registries

📰 TL;DR - Bridges and grooms-to-be can now create their gift registries on Etsy. Announced Wednesday, Etsy says this comes in response to an increase in searches for homemade gifts. According to this article: “The platform has seen an 872% spike in handmade gift searches in the last three months compared to the same period in 2022.”

💡 Insight - There’s something that feels absolutely retro about a wedding registry announcement, but also in this case, it feels long overdue. If you sell on Etsy, I would recommend revisiting your keywords and making sure you’re hitting on terms like “gift", “handmade gift,” and “wedding gift” to capitalize both on the registries and the data about search.

🤖 Can AI create an e-commerce brand?

📰 TL;DR - Can ChatGPT create an entire e-commerce idea from scratch? Maybe! Nik Sharma asked ChatGPT to build a profitable DTC business, and he thinks it could actually work. With a few conditions, the AI program suggested a monthly subscription box aimed at busy moms. It even estimated customer acquisition costs and pricing tiers and suggested how to scale to $1M in a year.

💡 Insight - Okay admittedly I don’t have any great insight here and I’m not suggesting ChatGPT should be the starting point for your next business. It’s just very interesting that if you wanted it to, it could be!
