Today's DTC news, tips, & tools you need to know

👗 Google’s AI fitting tool could be a win

📰 TL;DR - Not long ago we covered the launch of Google’a new AI-powered fitting tool. It lets people virtually “try on” clothes on different body shapes, using real models in various poses. What can it do for you? Well, as this piece mentions, the prediction is that this could lead to fewer returns. If customers have a better sense of how something will fit, they’re more likely to love and keep it. The other upside is Google’s ability to use AI to suggest specific products, like a little personal shopper.

💡 Insight - For this to really take off Google needs to put in some legwork. The AI fitting tool currently only works for women’s shirts — there are a lot more apparel categories to cover. The other potential downside here is that some customers may be put off by this technology, finding it difficult or confusing. For my two cents, surveys have shown younger generations are more keen on AI tech so if your target market skews young, I wouldn’t worry about this too much.

🧐 Customer service KPIs to pay attention to

📰 TL;DR - When it comes to customer service, we know the general philosophy is to get people accurate help quickly. But how do you actually assess if you’re doing that well? This post covers the KPIs to pay attention to for customer service such as: inquiry volume, average wait time, first response time, time to resolution, and more.

💡 Insight - As this post notes, people expect answers fast. I like that it includes goalposts for response time for different platforms. For example, replying to email in an hour is great, but for livechat people expect a response within a minute to feel they’re having a good experience. I’ll also say that all of this is much easier to track if you use a helpdesk tool. In addition to streamlining your customer service, they typically come equipped with analytics to make sure you’re improving your markers.

🧴 Prose debuts custom skincare using AI

📰 TL;DR - We hear a lot about AI can be used in your backend to improve processes, but how can it dictate your products? Well, here’s an example! Prose, known for their haircare products, is introducing a skincare line powered by AI. The formulas will all be personalized using AI, allowing for some 15 million potential combinations. The prices are actually pretty on par with what you’d find at Sephora, such as $29 cleanser, $64 serum and $52 moisturizer.

💡 Insight - I checked out Prose for myself and the AI matches you to products using a simple quiz — which I have to say has been around a while even if we didn’t call it “AI.” It’s a good quiz though! It has a nice, simple interface and asks practical questions like how long you spend outside, where you workout, stress levels, etc. It even personalizes your results based on your location — for example, my location has harder water than other places. And, of course, you have to give over your email to get your results. Altogether, pretty smart.
