Today's DTC news, tips, & tools you need to know

👀 TikTok’s new e-comm project

📰 TL;DR - TikTok is testing a brand new e-commerce product in the UK that’s been mysteriously titled “Project S.” It’s called “Trendy Beat” in the app and it’s a shopping section of products that are trending on TikTok. Here’s the catch though: it’s products that ByteDance has made and is selling on their own. The idea is they hunt down trendy goods and buy the rights to make them. Although it’s only being tested in the UK right now, they have filed a trademark application in the US.

💡 Insight - By all accounts, TikTok Shop has been flopping in the US during its beta phase. But it’s also still true that #tiktokmademebuyit is very much a thing. It’s certainly smart of TikTok to simply cut out the middleman, although it’s not the best news for people who want TikTok exposure but also want to retain their own products. Overall I get the sense that TikTok is just bamboozled about what to do with e-comm outside its Asian markets.

⚠️ Most DTC brands get THIS wrong about seeding products to influencers

The ancient (i.e. 2018) tactic of ""no commitment"" influencer seeding simply does not work anymore.

It creates unrealistic expectations and uses bait-n-switch to get influencers to promote you. Nobody likes that.

Meanwhile, there are some brands that seem to just get it. Why? They're doing something different... something unique... something that is not commonly shared on Twitter.

In this private document, made specifically for DTC Daily readers, a former agency owner shares what really works with influencer seeding. The notion doc has all his playbooks, templates, and follow-along videos. He's revealing it all.

Apply it and you could seed products with 70% activation rates + get sales & awareness for your brand!

📈 How a viral TikTok translates to sales

📰 TL;DR - I think it’s fair to assume that we all think a viral TikTok will translate to an increase in orders. But by how much? Zach Stuck, who owns multiple DTC brands, tweeted a chart showing how one viral TikTok caused a spike in sales. The TikTok has 717k+ views and he saw that turn into 11,000 website sessions, 280 orders, and $5,900 in profit.

💡 Insight - I love it when people share insights like this. And while it’s interesting to note, it’s hard to say if it can be replicated or if it’s representative. Results will definitely vary by the actual product, the audience, whether CTAs or present, and other things. However, what’s encouraging is that the TikTok in question was on the low end of what you’d call “viral” but still generated profit. And it only cost $1,000 for a TikTok creator. That’s some nice ROI.

🤖 10 web scraping prompts for ChatGPT

📰 TL;DR - Here’s a very neat Twitter thread showing some genuinely cool uses for ChatGPT. In this case, Chase Dimond used a particular extension (linked in the thread) to scrape web pages with prompts. He turns a product page into a Facebook ad, affiliate marketing ideas, and a sales one-pager, for example.

💡 Insight - Chase’s claim that these can increase sales by $10,000 per month is dubious, but hey, I respect a good Twitter hook! These are all pretty neat ideas and I could definitely see them being useful for e-comm entrepreneurs. The last idea, using this for competitive analysis, is especially cool.
