The email that made me rethink my breakfast—and marketing
I love all things retention! It’s a core part of who I am and what I really enjoy working on, especially when it comes to emails & SMS, and when I come across a really good one, the first thing that comes to my mind is, “I gotta share this with the DTC Daily community!”, so let’s look at one of the favourite emails I came across this week.
Here’s why I love this email from Surreal—and why you should take notes:
Hook that pulls you in
Three big, philosophical questions… and one is about breakfast. They lead with curiosity and humor, and you're already invested before they even pitch.
Benefits that slap
No fluff here. Each subscription perk—running out, discounts, flexibility, and cancellation—is spelled out in bold, no-nonsense copy. They hit every hesitation you might have and wipe it out.
Brand voice that doesn’t try too hard
The humor is effortless. No cringe. No dad jokes. Just witty, light-hearted, and self-aware copy that keeps you reading. That "Turns out it was cereal too" line? Perfect close.
CTAs that actually make you click
“SUBSCRIBE & SAVE” and “GET ENDLESS CEREAL”—not boring, not generic. They’re crystal clear and still on-brand.
Design that doesn’t fight the message
Bright colors, clean layout, and just the right amount of visual flair to keep it interesting without overwhelming you. Everything supports the message, nothing distracts.
This email does what every DTC brand should do that offer subscriptions:
Make subscribing sound like the only smart move, while keeping it fun and friction-free.
