Today's DTC news, tips, & tools you need to know

📦 Amazon doubles down on same-day delivery

📰 TL;DR - Amazon is investing in expanding same-day delivery service for shoppers. They'll do that by increasing the number of fulfillment centers that can deliver same-day. These facilities are able to pack an order within 30 minutes and get it into a Flex driver's vehicle for delivery within the next four hours. There are currently 46 of these facilities in the US. Amazon mainly relies on gig workers for these deliveries so there is a question of how future labor law changes could impact this approach.

💡 Insight - If you sell on Amazon, this is something to aim for. Amazon prioritizes its top-selling SKUs for this service. For the rest of us, it's a bit of a headache. Competing with next-day delivery is hard enough, but same-day? Again, we're seeing Amazon set an expected standard the rest of us need to compete with. So we'll say it again: buff up your delivery. If you can't be super fast, at least have the ability to offer accurate estimates.

📈 Out-of-Home Advertising, Made Easy & Measurable*

📰 TL;DR - AdQuick seamlessly connects advertisers to out-of-home (OOH) media owners anywhere in the U.S. and abroad, and makes it easier than ever to plan, buy, and measure every kind of outdoor advertising — from static billboards to hand-painted murals. If you’ve run online ads you’re used to the speed of deployment and accountability provided via analytics. AdQuick provides the same experience digital marketers are used to the OOH space.

💡 Insight - With AdQuick, advertisers gain immediate access to over 1,400 premium OOH media owners, can execute OOH buys 10x faster, launch OOH campaigns in as little as 48 hours, and unlock unprecedented measurability.

🤖 Gen Z loves a bot

📰 TL;DR - A new survey looked at how customers feel about conversational commerce, including the use of chatbots. It turns out Gen Z is most hyped about this tech, with 83% of those aged 18 to 24 saying they're more likely to make a purchase if they can message a brand rather than place a call. Further, 40% of customers said they'd switch to a competing brand if it took more than 30 minutes to get a customer service reply — something a chatbot can help solve.

💡 Insight - The most interesting tidbit here is that there's gap between what customers think and what brands think. Customers say long wait times matter more now than they did a year ago, but 77% of brand owners believed the opposite. The takeaway here is that customers want service fast and it seems like a no-brainer to use AI to achieve that, but they need to work well. Less than half of customers find chatbots easy to use. Invest in AI solutions that are well-trained and customized to your brand.

🔮 The power of e-comm data scraping

📰 TL;DR - Data scraping has a ton of uses for e-comm brands. This piece goes over some of those users, such as price monitoring, ad targeting, product research, and lead generation. It can even be used for monitoring customer sentiment or building relationships with influencers. Essentially, the more information you have, the more insights you can make to bolster your business.

💡 Insight - This piece does a great job outlining how powerful data can be, but it doesn't say much about how to data scrape. You can certainly take the time to learn a bit of coding to do it yourself, but I'm betting you don't have time for that. Thankfully, there are people available on places like Fiverr, Upwork, or the Shopify Experts portal that can help with this task.

📚 What Shopify's CEO is reading

📰 TL;DR - Over on the Shopify Blog, there's a list of 14 books about startups as recommended by the CEO, Tobias Lütke. If you don't know, Tobias started Shopify after building an e-commerce site to sell snowboards. And, well, look at him now. These books aren't actually very e-commerce specific, but more about the mindset needed for success.

💡 Insight - Your day-to-day is probably very focused on sales, numbers, marketing, and all the other fun stuff that comes with running an e-commerce business. What might get lost sometimes is the why of everything you're doing. This is a great set of books for getting into a growth mindset. I also like that there's a range of philosophies included and even The Elements of Style, a book about writing that's a must-read for anyone who produces any kind of copy.
