🕶 This startup wants customers to try before they buy
📰 TL;DR - By now we're all familiar with buy-now-pay-later apps like Klarna, but a French startup is trying something different and investors are hungry. Elyn is a try-before-you-buy offering that lets customers make a purchase but not pay until after they've received it and tried it out. The customer has five days to decide if they want to keep the items or not and only pay for what they keep. Elyn has just raised $2.7 million in pre-seed funding and their website boasts a substantial list of clients.
💡 Insight - This isn't a totally new idea. Subscription services have done this before — they send a curated selection of items and you return what you don't want. This extends that idea to e-commerce in general. Psychologically, it's pretty brilliant. Customers get to feel like they're risking very little and I'd be willing to bet that most items are kept anyway. Elyn claims their system increases the number of exchanges vs. full returns. They also claim they increase conversion by 30%. As far as I can tell it only works with Shopify so far, and if interested, you have to reach out directly to Elyn.

👚 How Oodie builds its product pages
📰 TL;DR - Carl Weische is offering a case study that breaks down how Oodie builds its product pages. Oodie, of course, is an Australian brand selling what is basically a wearable blanket and they are very popular, with some $450 million in sales in four years. The case study picks apart the anatomy of a product page, including how they describe the product, the use of UGC, how they differentiate their products, and more.

💡 Insight - Look I'm always a little skeptical when people ask for a follow/RT/reply before giving you something, but I got a copy of the case study myself and it's genuinely useful. Out of respect for Carl, I'm not going to link to it directly, but I do recommend taking a few seconds to get it yourself. It's a very thorough look at each section of the product page, including how they use emotion and personas to connect with customers, which I found quite interesting. If you want to learn from the best, here's your opportunity.
🧴 Tatcha's experiential pop-up actually drove major sales
📰 TL;DR - A little while ago we linked to a piece about skincare brand Tatcha's meditative IRL pop-up and complementary online experience. Glossy actually followed up to see if the event led to sales, and it turns out: yes. The Sephora in the same mall as the event sold the equivalent of one month of sales in just three days. As well, the event created over 9 million social media impressions.
💡 Insight - Pop-ups are an interesting idea for brands that aren't ready to go all-in on a retail location. There are a few things Tatcha did right here though. They created a very Instagram-friendly environment and invited influencers who could make the most of it. They also held it just steps from Sephora, where those interested could go and buy products right away. Pop-ups, when done well, are costly ventures, even for a big brand like Tatcha. But done right, they can pay off.
🎧 20 best podcasts for e-comm entrepreneurs
📰 TL;DR - When you're not reading amazing email newsletters (hi!) you might want to treat your ears to some business-minded podcasts. The Shopify blog has a roundup of 20 podcasts about business, many about e-commerce specifically. They put their own as number one, of course, but it's a great list all around, including eCommerce Fuel, Goal Digger Podcast, Honest Ecommerce, and other top contenders.
💡 Insight - Listening to how other people found success is never a bad idea. Better to hear about their mistakes than make those mistakes on your own. I personally love a podcast when playing a relaxing video game or driving. But also, this is a good list of podcasts you may want to reach out to if you have a story to share about your own journey.
