🍊 Data: the categories driving e-commerce

📰 TL;DR - Groceries are among the categories driving e-commerce forward, according to new data from Adobe. Online groceries grew 10.8% YoY in 2022 to a whopping $86.8 billion. Home furnishings weren't far behind, with a 10.2% growth YoY. And their growth is continuing in 2023. Meanwhile, electronics remains the top seller, but with slower growth overall.

💡 Insight - There are a couple of other cool insights in this report. One is that buy-now-pay-later still has a stronghold in the e-commerce world, despite some recent financial troubles at BNPL companies. Also: for the first time ever, a slim majority of cyber week 2022 sales were from mobile devices. We've said it once (or many times) and we'll say it again: optimize for mobile.

🤯 What's the deal with the wholesale craze?

📰 TL;DR - It's not just you — it seems like every other DTC brand is expanding into wholesale this year. But what gives? Well, there are a few reasons. One is that the cost of customer acquisition for DTC brands has done nothing but grow, making wholesale all the more attractive. Another factor is that investors are encouraging wholesale expansion.

💡 Insight - If the name of the game is growth, wholesale makes sense. In the middle of the pandemic, so many people switched to shopping online, but now that tide is changing. Getting into wholesale can simply be a way of going where the customers go. If you're itching for your next big move, wholesale is a sensible route to take.

☕️ Why e-commerce coffee is on the rise

📰 TL;DR - Perfect Daily Grind has an interesting industry piece looking at the rise of e-commerce for coffee brands. While grabbing a cup o' joe is still so rooted in the corner coffee shop experience, coffee sellers turned to e-commerce during the pandemic just like the rest of us. This article dives into who's doing it, the difficulties therein, and what coffee brands are learning along the way.

💡 Insight - This article only touches on this for a moment, but coffee is an interesting e-commerce venture because of the opportunity for subscription services. Coffee is the sort of thing that gets used every day and needs to be replenished often. And with the rise of customers turning to subscription purchases online, coffee makes a lot of sense to take part in that trend.
