Today's DTC news, tips, & tools you need to know
πΏ Trend alert: Showerheads
π° TL;DR - According to Glossy, showerheads are the next big thing in body care. A handful of DTC companies have popped up that offer high-tech takes on this bathroom staple. For example, Sprig by Kohler has infusion pods to add botanicals and skincare additives for a spa-like experience. Another competitor, Hai, has a Bluetooth-enabled showerhead to control water temperature and pressure and their own take on infusions. All are meant to be DIY-friendly, so no need to call a plumber to install them.
π‘ Insight - Reinventing the bathroom seems to be a steady category for DTC brands. There's been Tushy and Squatty Potty for toilet activities and now showerheads are up. The general theme seems to be offering simple, DIY solutions for creating a more luxurious bathroom and self-care experience without having to reno the whole thing or buy pricey upgrades. These also fit into the general trend of body and skin care. If you can offer affordable products for self-care, you're in good company.

π€ How to use AI for keyword research
π° TL;DR - PracticalEcommerce has been knocking it out of the park by testing AI chatbots for how they can be used for e-comm business owners. In this case, they asked chatbots to generate keywords, understand keyword intent, analyze SERPs, and perform other tasks. The results aren't bad! The bots were able to handle the inquiries, like generating related keywords for "online shoe store."
π‘ Insight - The writer was careful to note that they're not advocating for anyone to use chatbots for this particular purpose, but rather it's just a demonstration. If you already have a preferred method for keyword research this probably isn't that intriguing to you. But it's certainly an interesting use case and if you're looking for a new method, or a cheaper one, give this a whirl.
π©π½βπ» The WeWork of e-commerce
π° TL;DR - To be clear, I mean this piece is about a co-working and fulfillment space for e-commerce entrepreneurs, not a start-up disaster tale. Saltbox is a membership-based co-warehousing company with nine locations. It offers a space for entrepreneurs to run their businesses and keep products, rather than the traditional method of precariously stacking boxes in your garage. This piece in particular follows Nature's Syrup Hair & Skin Care, which is now based in the Minneapolis location.
π‘ Insight - As the interview subject here says, "Entrepreneurship is lonely sometimes." Saltbox is a neat solution because it offers both a practical way to scale beyond your own home and an opportunity to connect with other entrepreneurs. Saltbox has professionalized communal e-commerce work, but it makes me wonder if something similar can be achieved by organizing with other local sellers to share space.
π 3 more e-commerce trends for 2023
π° TL;DR - Yes, there's been a ton of articles like this since the start of the year, but this one has some new items and the focus is on what e-commerce platforms can provide. One is improved attribution. If you're only looking at the last click, you don't really know where a sale originated. Platforms are working to improve that. The second is improving content quality with, for example, videos. The third is a move to subscription models.
π‘ Insight - The subscription model insights were particularly interesting to me. We know that repeat business is crucial and subscriptions automate that. Shopify even announced updates to their subscription API for app developers, which shows this is an area they want to improve. I don't think I can even remember the last time I bought a DTC product and wasn't given a subscription option.
